What is a Hindu Panchang?
Hindu Panchang, also known as Panchangam, is a traditional calendar system based on the movement of the Sun and Moon. In Vedic Astrology, Panchang is used to understand important daily astrological timings and to select suitable dates for different activities.
The word Panchang comes from two Sanskrit words – “Panch” meaning five and “Ang” meaning parts. These five important elements are Vaar, Tithi, Nakshatra, Yoga and Karana.

Five Elements Of Hindu Panchang
Hindu Panchang comprises of five distinguished sources of energy, which are as follows:
- Vaar: Vaar represents the day of the week. Each day is associated with a particular planetary influence and is considered while selecting suitable timings.
- Tithi (The Lunar Day): Tithi represents the lunar day and is calculated according to the position of the Moon in relation to the Sun. There are different Tithis during the waxing and waning phases of the Moon.
- Nakshatra (Lunar Mansion): Nakshatra refers to the lunar constellation occupied by the Moon. Vedic Astrology traditionally recognises 27 Nakshatras, each having its own characteristics and significance.
- Yoga: Yoga is one of the five important elements of Panchang. It is calculated using the positions of the Sun and Moon and is used while analysing daily astrological timings.
- Karana: Karana represents half of a Tithi. It is also considered while calculating Panchang and determining suitable timings for various activities.
